I have always been fascinated by the American “cowboy”
films, which also depicted the rugged American desert
landscape.
On visiting some of these areas for the first time,
it started a love affair with travelling in the USA.
We have returned many times to our favourite “desert”
states of New Mexico, Utah and Nevada, where most
of my panel images were taken. We discovered old abandoned
vehicles preserved for prosperity in the dry desert
air, each having their own story to tell. In complete
contrast we encountered big American trucks speeding
along deserted roads that seem to go on forever.
In my panel, “Roadside USA”, I have tried
to portray these rusty and working vehicles in their
environment. I have applied a textured and soft treatment
to my images which is my interpretation of rusting
vehicles and their paint work gradually fading under
the brightness of the desert sun.
