We do it again!
At the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain Annual Slide Championship
at Warwick University on the 21 July 2007 we came joint 4th , which
means once again we do not have to qualify for the competition next
season. This follows on from our 3rd position last year.
Despite all of the floods and diversions all of the participating
clubs were able to deliver their slides. Our first round scores
were as follows
FIRST ROUND
1 Cuban bar Phil Ball 12
2 Red eyed tree frog Gary Irvine 12
3 Proud champion Phil Joyce 9
4 The winner Dave McKay 11
5 The splash Phil Ball 12
6 Abandoned Colin Harrison 12
7 The Priest Gary Irvine 11
8 Melancholy Colin Harrison 14
After a quick committee meeting, as the judges did not appear to
like landscapes we selected our 8 for the next round
SECOND ROUND
9 After the bomb Harry Harris 10
10 Our Dog Phil Ball 11
11 Wild Red Deer Niall Riddell 13
12 Riding the waves Ian Lees 10
13 Wilderbeast crossing Ivor Porter 12
14 Evacuation Colin Harrison 12
15 The Kiss Phil Ball 15
16 Stop Colin Harrison 12
This gave us a combined total 187 points from both rounds which
easily put us into the finals.
THE FINAL
We were now down to the top 8 clubs and we knew it was not going
to be easy.
We had to lose 8 of our original images and produce 10 new ones.
We were also restricted by a maximum of four images per person and
a maximum of four natural history. Once again a quick committee
meeting, and some tactical selection, we chose our top 20 slides..
1 Corner shop Peter Warrington 11
2 Hurrying home Peter Warrington ` 10
3 Old Window Peter Warrington 9
4 Didcot Power station Harry Harris 9
5 Common Blue Tony Marsh 12
6 Biodegradable Phil Ball 9
7 African Blues Gary Irvine 12
8 The Priest Gary Irvine 10
9 Red eyed tree frog Gary Irvine 12
10 Promenade walkers Phil Joyce 10
I knew there was a big gap between our best 16 images and the remainder
of our 40 banked images. So I was not too worried at the halfway
stage when we were in last position with 104 points with our best
images to come.
11 The splash Phil Ball 11
12 The winner Dave MacKay 11
13 Dusky Dolphins Dave Foster 10
14 Latin Lovers Colin Harrison 13
15 Cuban bar Phil Ball 12
16 Stop Colin Harrison 12
17 The Kiss Phil Ball 15
18 The Journey Colin Harrison 11
19 Wild Red Deer Niall Riddell 14
20 Melancholy Colin Harrison 13
Our scores gradually picked up to a total of 226points, 22 points
more than we had in the first half, and gaining joint 4th position.
The final results were as follows
1st Wigan 10 250
2nd Smethwick PS 238
3rd Amersham PS 228
4th Oxford PS 226
4th Dorchester CC 226
The icing on the cake, congratulations to Phil Ball for his slide,
“The Kiss” being awarded one of the Selector’s
medals
The Plate competition for the clubs not contesting the final was
won by Bristol PS.
In Round 1 they were leading the main competition at the half way
stage, but they had a very poor second half and missed out going
into the final.
Many thanks to all our supporters who came to Warwick last Saturday.
It was a fantastic day and once again it proves that we are one
of the strongest and most consistent clubs in the UK . To get this
far firstly you need around 15 good images and three or four very
good images. Secondly all the OPS competitions need to be monitored
during the season, and the Warwick selection for 2008 needs to be
started this September.
Finally many thanks to Dave McKay for his help with the selection
and all the members who supplied slides and digital files.
Didn’t we do well!
See you all in September and all we need is three new gold medal
winners for Warwick 2008!
Best Wishes

Following on from Colin's report, and adding my views from a judge's
perspective...the most pleasing thing for me was people saying afterwards
that the scoring had been fair and consistent - and they don't say
that every year! Of course it helps when the three judges are in
tune and that seemed to be the case this year...so no erratic decisions
like one judge giving 2, another 5. And thankfully this year the
number of 15s was more realistic and those who got one (well done
Phil B) thoroughly deserved to.
Well done to Colin for getting his "tactics" right - although
he sailed a bit close to the wind perhaps! At the half way stage
one of the other judges, Paul Keene, said "what's happened
to Oxford?" I could only shrug my shoulders. In fact Dave told
me afterwards that Oxford had scored 3 nines, so to come back from
this was quite remarkable. Special mention for Phil, when "The
Kiss" came up this was an automatic 15, no hesitation from
any of the judges. And when Ian Platt said he wanted this for his
selector's award (even before we went to the "back room")
I didn't try to dissuade him!
So well done to Oxford, as Colin says in his report OPS are now
a respected force in the country - you don't get into the top positions
year after year without having real depth. However, next year is
going to be tough as Colin will be judging and we won't be able
to use his slides or expertise in selection. In the coming months
Dave and I will be making notes of any Warwick possibles, so please
let us have your work if we ask for it and help support your club.
And real pressure on the Golden Boy - can we have another one as
good as the Kiss please? Or more than one if you can manage it Phil?!
Finally to say I thoroughly enjoyed the day (as I'm sure Colin will
next year) and after nearly 15 years of judging at various clubs
it has certainly been a highlight. Does this mean it's all downhill
from now on...perhaps I should retire gracefully!!
