Gary Irvine LRPS DPAGB

Q: When did you start taking pictures?
A: I started at the age of 10 with a box brownie camera on a family
visit to Rimini in Italy. This camera was quickly lost on the way back
from a day trip to Venice but luckily I had burnt some film by then and
was hooked. I then got through a series of Instamatic type cameras
before finally investing in a Praktica SLR.

Q: What are the rewards of being a member of OPS?
A: To me the main ones are; Getting honest and informed appraisal of
your work, and the chance to see some excellent photographs by guest
speakers and fellow members.

Q: Have you any other interests?
A: Travelling, Eating and Drinking.

Q: Have you any photographic awards?
A: Last year I achieved a Credit from the Photographic Alliance of
Great Britain (CPAGB) and this year I was awarded a Licentiateship from
the Royal Photographic Society (LRPS). Before joining OPS I would not
even have contemplated trying for such awards never mind actually
achieving them.

Q: Here is a blank cheque, what piece of equipment would you buy?
A: A 4WD fully equipped for camping in Southern Africa which I would
then use to visit as many National Parks in Namibia, Botswana and South
Africa as time and money would allow. I would happily use my current
photographic kit.

Q: What is your best picture?
A: It is that perfect one on the film I have shot but not yet got
developed...it may even be one of those in the box brownie lost in
Italy!

Q: What is your most successful picture?
A: A picture of a fisherman cycling along the beach in Zanzibar - it
won the OPS Digital Trophy in 2004 and also received a Highly Commended
in the Thames Valley 2004 Regional RPS exhibition.

Q: What was the worst picture you ever took?
A: It is usually on the last film I shot...I should know better by now!

Q: What is your favourite film?
A: Casablanca .... or any great Humphrey Bogart classic.

Q: What are your favourite subjects?
A: African wildlife in its natural habitat.

Q: If you could take a picture again which one would it be?
A: One of a Silverback Mountain Gorilla in Rwanda...not to get a better
picture but just to re-live a truly unforgettable "David Attenborough"
moment.

Q: Who are your favourite photographers?
A: Jane Bown, Bill Brandt, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Man Ray.
