Colin Armitage CPAGB

Q How long have you been interested in Photography?
Since I was 12; I am now 60.

Q Why did you start taking pictures?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in cameras as pieces of equipment, and also in images. I was no good at painting, so……

Q What was the first picture you took, that you can remember?
I can’t remember the first picture, but my first ‘batch’ of pictures was on holiday in Italy when I was 12. I still have some, and quite a lot have the subject on ‘the thirds’!

Q Have you any photographic awards?
CPAGB

Q Have you any other interests?
My home computer (I worked in an IT company), so digital photography was a natural step for me.

Q What was the first camera you owned?
An Agfa Isola – took 120 film – one shutter speed and two choices of aperture.

Q Which piece of equipment could you not live without?
Difficult to answer; I have an ‘all-in-one’ digital camera, but do not like to be without a decent wideangle capability.

Q What equipment do you use now?
Konica/Minolta A2, plus wide angle converter.

Q Here is a blank cheque, what piece of equipment would you buy?
Probably what I’ve got. I’m so used to the ease of carrying a digital camera with a good zoom range and built in macro, I wouldn’t want to start lugging around a heavy SLR kit again
.
Q How long have you been a member of OPS?
4 years

Q What are the rewards of being a member of OPS?
Having your standard of photography raised, and having people to discuss image making with.

Q Have you been a member of other camera clubs?
Yes, Bicester Camera Club

Q What would you say was the hardest picture you ever took?
1977, staying with friends in Trinidad. I spent hours trying to get a decent shot of a hummingbird with only a 150mm lens. The result was less than brilliant!

Q What is your most successful picture?
A heavily ‘photoshopped’ portrait entitled ‘Solange’ . It was accepted for the London Salon, and appeared on the front (and inside) of What Digital Camera.

Q What was the worst picture you ever took?
No idea; I’ve taken too many indifferent pictures to remember any particular one.

Q What is your favourite film?
It was Fuji 100ASA slide film. Now it’s Compactflash!

Q What are your favourite subjects?
I’ll try anything, but at least half of what I take are landscapes.

Q If you could take a picture again which one would it be?
The hummingbird, now that I have a longer lens, auto focus and auto exposure.

Q Who are your favourite photographers?
I don’t have a favourite. I like anyone who produces images that I enjoy.

Q Has any one picture influenced your photography?
No. The biggest influence was having photoshop/digital photography shown to me by a friend several years ago. It was a revelation, and I immediately switched to digital, initially by scanning slides and negs.
